Sustainable living
I’m fortunate to have lived a childhood with all the delights you mentioned above. Growing up in a small town like Vijayawada, walking was the primary mode of commute. It was also a way of socialising. We would walk to the destination, turnaround, head back to the starting point and walk all the way to the destination once again and repeat this until we exhausted all the topics of interest.
Electric geysers were unheard of. Hot water came from the old copper pot heated atop a brick and mud stove that used dried branches and leaves of coconut tree from the backyard. My mother would stack coconut spines together to tie a broom.
No overhead water tanks or running water taps either. A hand powered boring pump was the source of water for the household.
Aircon didn’t invade my household till mid-2000s. Offices weren’t airconditioned either. Naturally, it was ok to (literally) sweat at work. We didn’t have to suit up to look professional.
Vijayawada (notoriously known as Blazewada) summers would necessitate load shedding during post-work hours bringing us all out of our humble abodes giving an opportunity to mingle with neighbours and play under moonlight / star light.
Life was simpler, sustainable and fulfilling back then.
